Contributors Guidelines

The following are general guidelines for the regular departments and features in Latitudes & Attitudes. Any articles, photos or information submitted to FTW Publishing, Inc. must be exclusive submissions, for one time use.

Articles and photos will be returned to the submitter only if accompanied by a self addressed, stamped envelope. All photos, slides and artistic representations must be individually marked with the submitters name and address.

Scuttlebutt (short news pieces)

Short items of interest to cruisers regarding strange, funny or important news items.

Pay Rate:Products

You Think that was Dumb? (Humor)

Short stories that show some of the funny and stupid things that boaters do. Should include the submitters name and the name of boat or area it took place.

Pay Rate: $100-175

There's This Place (Port Guide)

Two to three pages of information regarding a particular harbor or anchorage. Should include a sketch chart and photos of the area. Photo copies from original charts or cruising guides may be used.

Under Way (Photo Section)

Photos that show the cruising world. All submissions should have the name of the submitter as well as where it was shot. Photos should be high resolution digital jpeg files or very clear prints (prints cannot be returned). Digital photos should be sent at their original size as downsizing can ruin the quality. They can be emailed as jpeg attachments. Due to the overwhelming number of photos we receive, please limit submissions to two or three of your best shots within a six month period.

Galley Gourmet (Recipes)

Should include a photo of the finished item, along with a photo of the chef and any special ingredients.

Pay Rate: $25-75

Flotsam & Jetsam (news of cruisers)

Cruising stories and experiences. Should be from 750-1200 words and must include at least one good photo.

Boat People (Personality Close-Ups)

A "portrait" type photo of a cruiser and a one paragraph bio of his/her cruising background or personal history. Include miles/ years sailed.

Pay Rate: $50-75

Sea Urchins
(Cruising with Children)

Stories or tips for or from children who cruise. Include at least one good photo.

Pay Rate: $25-100

K.I.S.S. - Keep It Simple Stupid

Easy repairs or solutions to common cruising problems. Photo, diagram or
drawing preferred.

Pay Rate: $50-75

Noah's Ark

Humorous or thought provoking stories about sailing with pets or animals. Should include at least one good photo.

FEATURES

Pay Rate: 100-?

Feature Stories

Stories of interest to cruisers and sailors about the cruising lifestyle or specific events, adventures or mis-adventures. Must include good digital photos, slides or prints.  May be from two to ten pages of text.  We reserved the right to edit to size. 

Pay Rate: $200

Feature Boats

Photos, text & technical information on a vessel built specifically (or re fit for) cruising. Should be an experienced vessel. Story must include good photos of the interior, exterior, under sail and special features. Also must include a completed "tech Sheet" with pertinent information.

Technical Information

Submissions:
Preferred submissions  should be on  CD.  Documents should be in Microsoft Word, Microsoft InDesign,  or simple text.  If submission is typewritten it should be in a double spaced format.  Submissions can also be emailed, but stand a greater risk of being lost in the "system"

Payment:
Payment for features and articles that are unsolicited will be at the standard rate set by FTW Publishing, Inc. and will be paid upon publication. All rights are one time only unless otherwise indicated.

Legal Release:
All submissions must be accompanied by a letter of submission indicating that you are submitting the photo/article for the purpose of publication in Latitudes & Attitudes. Submissions are for one time print rights. Latitudes & Attitudes retains the right to reprint articles for advertising or special issues.

Return policy:
All photos and articles must be accompanied by a self addressed stamped envelope if they are to be returned. All photos must be marked with the submitters name, address and where taken or story it is for.
